Subaru has issued a recall for 71,207 Crosstrek and Forester hybrid models due to a defective fuel cap that could lead to fuel leaks and increase the risk of vehicle fires. The recall affects the following models:
- 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
- 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid
According to a report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicles left parked with nearly full fuel tanks may experience elevated fuel tank pressure in high temperatures. This pressure can cause fuel to rise, and if the fuel cap is not properly sealed, fluid may leak. Subaru noted that “a fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a vehicle fire.”
In the meantime, Subaru advises owners of affected vehicles to park outdoors and keep fuel levels below 50% until the remedy becomes available.
Once repair parts are ready, Subaru dealers will replace the fuel filler cap gasket with an improved version designed to enhance sealing performance. The service will be provided free of charge.
Owners of the recalled vehicles will begin receiving notifications starting March 25, 2026.
Because recall notices do not always reach every vehicle owner, Subaru encourages drivers to check whether their car is affected. Vehicle owners can use their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), license plate, or year, make, and model to verify recalls through Subaru’s recall center.
