Drivers in Louisiana may soon benefit from lower car insurance premiums as more than 30 insurers have filed for rate decreases on private passenger auto policies, according to Louisiana State Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple.
Temple attributed the reductions to a decline in vehicle crashes, which has led to fewer insurance claims statewide. “For the first time in five years, we actually had insurance companies take rate decreases,” Temple said. “That’s a good indication that we’re moving in the right direction.”
When Drivers Will See Changes
Despite the filings, motorists should not expect immediate reductions in their monthly bills. Insurance rate adjustments typically take effect at the time of policy renewal and only for those whose providers are among the companies filing for decreases.
Temple explained, “When insurance companies file for rate changes, whether it’s up or down, that doesn’t translate to a change in the individual premium that month or next month. It’s when you renew your insurance.”
Shop Around for the Best Rate
The commissioner encouraged drivers to compare quotes from multiple insurers when renewing their policies. “You should always shop your insurance, get multiple quotes, make insurance companies earn your business, and earn your premium dollars,” Temple advised.
Other Insurance Costs Remain High
It’s important to note that these rate reductions only apply to private passenger auto insurance. Commercial auto insurance rates have not followed the same downward trend, and homeowners insurance costs across Louisiana continue to rise for many residents.
