Kia has introduced a refreshed version of its flagship eco-friendly compact SUV, the Niro, marking its first facelift since the second-generation model debuted in 2022. The update underscores Kia’s strategic push to strengthen its position in the compact SUV market alongside the Seltos.
The facelifted Niro boasts improved fuel efficiency of 20.2 kilometers per liter and incorporates a range of advanced driving technologies. Kia began accepting orders for the updated model on Tuesday, with production scheduled at the company’s AutoLand Hwaseong plant in Gyeonggi Province.
Positioned as a more refined alternative to the Seltos, the Niro targets customers who value lower height, high fuel efficiency, and sleek design. “While Seltos appeals to those who prefer traditional SUV styling with bold, boxy lines, Niro offers a sophisticated option, and the two models are designed to complement each other rather than compete,” a Kia spokesperson said at a media event on Monday.
The updated Niro is powered by a 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain producing up to 141 horsepower. Its hybrid-specific technologies, including a smart regenerative braking system, optimize fuel efficiency by adjusting braking intensity based on vehicle distance, real-time road conditions, and traffic patterns. Additionally, a predictive control system evaluates the route and road conditions to manage battery charge levels and enhance real-world fuel economy.
Kia also refined the Niro’s suspension for a smoother ride and improved cabin quietness through enhanced sound-absorbing materials and reinforced rear cross-member mounting bushings. The interior benefits from upgraded materials and a design focused on comfort and practicality.
The Niro’s starting price is 28.85 million won ($19,324) after applicable eco-friendly vehicle tax benefits, placing it in a similar price range as the Seltos.
“The Niro has long been recognized as Kia’s representative eco-friendly SUV, thanks to its outstanding fuel efficiency and practicality,” the company said. “With a more refined design and enhanced safety and convenience features, the new Niro offers an appealing choice for customers seeking a practical and efficient compact SUV.”
