Older Drivers Could See Car Insurance Jump by £500 as They Hit 80, Money Supermarket Warns

by Shreeya

UK drivers could face a significant spike in car insurance premiums as they reach milestone ages, with some older motorists potentially paying up to £500 more annually.

Data from Money Supermarket shows that drivers between the ages of 70 and 79 enjoy the lowest average car insurance premiums at £429 per year. However, for those aged 80 to 89, the average rises sharply to £586—an increase of £157.

Despite often being the most comprehensive form of coverage, fully comprehensive insurance can sometimes be the cheapest option. Experts recommend comparing quotes to see if drivers can secure better protection at a similar or even lower cost. Currently, the average fully comprehensive car insurance policy costs £510.71 per year.

Insurance costs are generally lower for experienced drivers, while new drivers—particularly those who have held their licence for less than a year—tend to face the highest premiums. Money Supermarket explained that younger drivers are considered higher-risk, leading to higher rates.

“Drivers who have accumulated years without incidents will benefit from a no-claims bonus, often resulting in lower premiums,” the platform noted. “Conversely, a history of accidents, claims, or penalty points can increase your insurance costs as insurers see you as a higher-risk driver.”

As older drivers approach their 80s, this data suggests that insurers may factor age into risk assessments, potentially causing steep rises in premiums for senior motorists.
