Selena Gomez has been candid about her bipolar disorder, revealing the long and complex path she took to fully understand her mental health.
On the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Gomez shared, “I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed. I would try multiple therapists. And that’s why it’s hard… all of it is so f—– complicated.” Her comments shed light on the challenges many face when seeking an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
The “Only Murders in the Building” star has sought extensive support to manage her condition, including attending four different rehab programs. Despite this, her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, noted that managing bipolar disorder remains a nuanced process. “Even Selena will have a moment where she’s having mania and doesn’t know,” he said. “She’ll realize it after it’s happening, and sometimes she doesn’t even remember. It’s such a delicate thing because you’re not supposed to really talk to someone while they’re deep in it.”
Gomez echoed her husband’s perspective, explaining that she can sometimes recognize when mania sets in. “I’m equally proud to say that I do have moments of mania. I’m not ashamed at all because I can catch them a bit quicker,” she said. She added that having a supportive partner is crucial: “It’s helpful to have someone who understands where the temperature is and meets you where you are, helping you gradually understand what’s happening.”
The singer also emphasized the sense of freedom she feels by being open about her mental health. “The hypocrisy of shaming people for therapy is that it’s just not for everyone, which is fine. But for me, it finally allowed me to understand why I handled things the way I did. I would act out of fear, love, or passion—it was inconsistent, it was crazy,” Gomez said.
Her openness serves as a reminder of the challenges and complexities of mental health, and the importance of seeking help, understanding, and support.
