Online fashion retailer Shein has issued an urgent product recall in the United Kingdom after safety regulators warned that one of its decorative sand products may contain asbestos, a hazardous material linked to serious illnesses including mesothelioma. The recall adds to a growing list of products flagged by authorities amid rising concerns about asbestos contamination in consumer goods.
Health Warning Issued for Decorative Sand Product
The UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) announced the recall of Shein’s Multi-Colour Ultra-Fine Quartz Sand, citing potential contamination with small amounts of asbestos. The product is sold in clear plastic bags and comes in several colors, including yellow, brown, orange, and green.
Marketed for decorative and craft purposes, the sand is commonly used for activities such as play projects, texture painting, vase filling, room decoration, and art. However, the OPSS warned that the product “presents a risk to health as the sand may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos,” a substance that has been banned in the UK due to its severe health risks.
Even minimal exposure to asbestos fibers can be dangerous. When disturbed, the fibers can become airborne and inhaled, potentially leading to long-term health complications.
Concerns Over Long-Term Exposure Risks
Authorities say the contamination risk is particularly troubling because decorative sand is often used indoors and may remain in homes for extended periods. Consumers may unknowingly inhale fibers during use or when the material is disturbed later in decorative displays such as vases or art projects.
Asbestos exposure is the primary known cause of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart. The disease typically develops decades after exposure and is often diagnosed at advanced stages.
Medical experts emphasize that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure, and even brief contact with contaminated materials can carry long-term health consequences. In addition to mesothelioma, asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer, asbestosis, and other serious respiratory diseases.
Growing Number of Asbestos-Related Product Recalls
The Shein recall comes amid a surge of similar safety alerts across the UK and internationally. Regulators have issued more than a dozen warnings in recent months regarding products suspected of asbestos contamination.
Several sand-filled toys have also been pulled from shelves. Among them are Stretcherz stretch toys, which contain sand-like materials and have been sold by major retailers including Aldi, Argos, Asda, Smyths Toys, Tesco, TK Maxx, Homesense, and The Works.
The issue has also surfaced in Australia, where similar recalls have raised alarms among regulators and consumers. In the UK, the situation has escalated to the point that dozens of schools have temporarily closed while authorities investigate potential contamination from sand-based materials used in classrooms and playgrounds.
Safety Guidance for Consumers
To minimize potential exposure, the OPSS is urging anyone who purchased the Shein sand product to stop using it immediately and keep it away from children.
For those already in possession of the product, safety officials recommend carefully sealing the sand to prevent the release of airborne particles. Authorities advise placing the item in a heavy-duty plastic bag, securing it with double tape, clearly labeling the package, and storing it in a safe location until it can be properly disposed of or returned according to official instructions.
Regulators continue to investigate the source of contamination and are monitoring other products that may contain similar materials. Consumers are encouraged to stay informed through official safety alerts and product recall announcements.
