Study Shows Poloxamer 188 Hydrogel Speeds Healing of Pediatric Facial and Scalp Burns Without Infection

A recent case series has explored the use of Poloxamer 188-based dressings in treating facial and scalp burns among pediatric patients, showing promising results in both healing and patient comfort. The study took place between September and December 2024, involving seven children with second-degree burns on the face and scalp. Treatment focused on applying PluroGel, a hydrogel dressing that contains Poloxamer 188, until wounds were fully healed.

Poloxamer 188 is a non-ionic surfactant used in wound care because of its thermoresponsive micellar properties. These properties make the dressing soft at low temperatures, help maintain moisture, and allow for gentle dressing changes without causing trauma to the wounds. During the course of the study, no adverse reactions or infections were noted, and children who could express themselves described the treatment as pleasant, with reduced itchiness during recovery.

The average time for wounds to completely heal was around 12 days, and superficial burns tended to recover faster than mixed-depth burns. The dressing was applied initially under anesthesia after burn excision, then reapplied daily without the need for anesthesia, only analgesia. Maintenance was straightforward, and the protocol continued until full epithelialization. The results were consistent: patients with superficial burns healed in less than ten days, while those with more complex injuries required slightly longer. Healing times varied depending on burn causes, but no complications appeared.

The study highlighted the importance of moist wound environments, especially for partial-thickness burns. Poloxamer 188-based hydrogel offers a unique solution by combining moisture retention with easy, pain-free dressing removal. It also demonstrated the ability to prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and support cell regeneration. Other dressings, like Aloe vera-based hydrogels and hydrogel with antimicrobial agents, were discussed as alternatives but may differ in effectiveness or usability.

Though the study did not include a control group or long-term follow-up, findings suggest that Poloxamer 188 dressings can significantly contribute to faster healing and reduced discomfort in sensitive facial and scalp areas. Further research with larger patient groups and longer observation periods is recommended to confirm the benefits and explore how these dressings can optimize outcomes for children suffering burns.
