JW Pharmaceutical Approved to Start Clinical Trials for New Hair Loss Drug JW0061 in South Korea

JW Pharmaceutical received official approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to launch a phase 1 clinical trial for its new hair loss treatment candidate, JW0061. The company announced that the study will take place at Seoul National University Hospital and involve 104 healthy adult volunteers, both Korean and Caucasian. Scientists will apply the drug directly to participants’ scalps to test its safety and understand how the drug is absorbed and processed in the body.

The candidate drug JW0061 is the first of its kind and operates through a completely new mechanism. It is designed to bind to a specific receptor found in hair follicle stem cells, encouraging hair growth through natural biological processes. This sets it apart from current hair loss treatments, which often depend on suppressing male hormones or widening blood vessels. JW0061 is being developed as a topical solution suitable for both men and women.

Before reaching human testing, JW0061 demonstrated strong results in laboratory studies. In human skin organoid models, the drug was found to boost hair follicle generation by about 7.2 times compared to existing treatments. Animal studies showed a maximum increase in hair growth speed by up to 39 percent. JW Pharmaceutical has completed patent registrations for its new treatment in several regions, including Korea, Japan, China, Australia, Brazil, and the United States. In the U.S., the patent offers exclusive rights to the technology until 2039.

Based on the findings from this first human study, JW Pharmaceutical will review options for future clinical studies and consider other possible medical uses. JW0061 had earlier gained recognition by being chosen for the National New Drug Development Project in South Korea, a program supporting advances in medical innovation. The company emphasized that reaching the clinical testing stage is a major step forward, aiming to rapidly advance the drug’s development as an innovative solution for hair loss worldwide.

According to a company representative, JW Pharmaceutical plans to move forward quickly with clinical development, using insights from the preclinical research and the upcoming phase 1 trial to strengthen its strategy as it hopes to offer a new option for people coping with various forms of hair loss.
