A Massachusetts woman faces multiple criminal charges, including kidnapping and assault, after allegedly posing as a licensed physician and performing cosmetic surgery that left a patient with permanent scarring.
According to a Suffolk County District Attorney’s news release, 34-year-old Dingrui Wang is charged with four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault and battery causing serious injury, one count of kidnapping, and two counts of larceny over $1,200 by false pretense. Authorities also allege Wang committed unauthorized practice of medicine and improperly used the title of physician to receive payment for her services.
Wang reportedly performed double eyelid blepharoplasty surgery on a 22-year-old patient in January 2020 at an unlicensed clinic located at 57A Brighton Ave in Allston. According to medical sources, blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids, with potential risks including bruising, swelling, difficulty closing the eyes, infection, and, rarely, adverse reactions to anesthetics.
The Suffolk District Attorney claims Wang injected a local anesthetic into the victim’s eyelids alongside non-FDA-approved dermal fillers. After completing surgery on the first eyelid, the patient allegedly experienced extreme pain and attempted to leave the facility. The news release states that Wang “pushed her back onto the table” and refused to allow her to leave until the procedure was finished, leaving the victim with permanent scarring.
Wang is also accused of misrepresenting herself as holding current licenses as an aesthetician, massage therapist, and hair salon operator in order to secure a $37,379 loan from the American Lending Center, despite her licenses being suspended.
“Physicians are licensed for very good reasons, primary among them the assurance that patients are going to be treated by someone trained and certified to deliver safe, effective medical procedures,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. “When misrepresentations are made, the results can be devastating.”
A Suffolk Grand Jury indicted Wang on Thursday, January 29. She is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Thursday, February 5. Authorities remind the public that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
