Cosmetic surgery in India is rapidly moving into the mainstream, with procedures ranging from rhinoplasty to body contouring becoming increasingly accepted by the public. Despite growing awareness, experts caution that accurate information about these procedures remains limited.
Dr. Lukesh Patil, a senior Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon with over 14 years of experience, says that while societal acceptance has improved, the spread of misinformation is a major concern.
“Cosmetic surgery is no longer taboo, but misinformation still is. What worries me is how casually complex medical procedures are being portrayed online,” Dr. Patil explains.
Social media platforms are flooded with transformation reels and influencer-led trends, often presenting cosmetic procedures as quick, painless, and risk-free. Dr. Patil warns that such portrayals can lead to unrealistic expectations and unsafe decisions.
“A short video cannot explain anatomy, surgical risks, recovery time, or long-term outcomes. Cosmetic surgery is not content; it’s clinical science,” he says.
Dr. Patil is the Founder and Director of Seraphic Aesthetics in Navi Mumbai and is associated with Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He emphasizes that patient safety, the surgeon’s credentials, and proper infrastructure are far more important than price or popularity.
“Cheap packages and trend-driven procedures often ignore individual anatomy. When safety is compromised, the damage—both physical and emotional—can be permanent,” he adds.
Dr. Patil’s academic background strengthens his credibility. He completed his MBBS from RSMU, Ryazan, followed by an MS in General Surgery from Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital, Indore, where he received a Gold Medal and Best Resident Award. He later earned an MCh in Plastic Surgery from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, and has published in national and international journals, including authoring chapters in medical textbooks.
