Novo Nordisk’s oral version of its popular GLP-1 weight-loss drug, Wegovy, is now available across 70,000 U.S. pharmacies, presenting a more convenient and cost-effective alternative to injectable forms of Wegovy and Eli Lilly’s weekly GLP-1 medicine, Zepbound.
While analysts at GlobalData do not expect the oral formulation to significantly replace injectable sales in 2026, some medium-term cannibalization is anticipated. At the same time, the pill may attract patients who are hesitant to use injections, potentially expanding the overall weight-loss treatment market. The ease of oral administration could also encourage more patients to start treatment and maintain adherence over longer periods. Additionally, oral Wegovy offers flexibility for those seeking short-term or targeted weight management, such as during holidays or special events.
Estimating the size of the oral weight-loss market remains challenging. Novo Nordisk has previously experienced unpredictable surges and declines in demand for injectable Wegovy, suggesting similar fluctuations may occur with the pill. Nevertheless, the potential user base for oral Wegovy could rival Eli Lilly’s once-daily anti-obesity drug, orforglipron, which is expected to gain FDA approval in Q2 2026 and is forecasted to reach around 360,000 U.S. patients next year.
Novo Nordisk anticipates strong consumer demand for oral Wegovy, citing both cost advantages and user-friendly administration as key drivers. According to GlobalData POLI, U.S. ex-manufacturer and wholesale prices for Wegovy tablets (ranging from 1.5 mg to 25 mg per 30-unit pack) remain at $1,349 to $1,618, similar to the injectable versions. However, Novo Nordisk has adopted a differentiated pricing strategy for direct-to-consumer sales: starter doses of 1.5 mg and 4 mg are priced at $149 per month for out-of-pocket patients, while higher maintenance doses of 9 mg and 25 mg cost $299 per month.
By comparison, the injectable Wegovy starter dose costs $199 per month, with maintenance doses at $349 per month. Zepbound injectables, sold directly to patients, range from $299 to $449 monthly depending on strength. These pricing disparities could influence U.S. patients to switch from injectables to the oral format.
Further expanding access, Amazon Pharmacy now offers same-day delivery for Wegovy tablets through its digital pharmacy service, providing a convenient option for patients seeking weight-loss treatment.
