Teladoc Health is upgrading its 24/7 virtual urgent care offering for health plans by expanding the range of conditions it treats and enhancing clinical decision-making through real-time specialist consultations, the company announced at the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference.
The expanded capabilities are designed to help health plans reduce overall healthcare spending by limiting the need for follow-up visits, referrals and additional appointments after an initial virtual urgent care encounter.
After more than two decades of operation, Teladoc’s virtual urgent care service will now address a broader set of conditions, including back and joint pain, hair loss and sleep-related issues, in addition to common acute illnesses such as colds, coughs and ear infections.
The move mirrors features popularized by direct-to-consumer telehealth platforms such as Hims & Hers, which provide streamlined access to treatment for specific conditions like hair loss. However, Teladoc’s 24/7 Care product is delivered through employer-sponsored and health plan coverage, rather than operating as a direct-to-consumer service.
Teladoc is also positioning virtual urgent care as a key entry point for members with poorly controlled chronic conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Patients who qualify can be seamlessly referred into Teladoc’s chronic condition management programs, which provide ongoing clinical support and monitoring.
A central component of the upgrade is deeper integration with Teladoc’s network of board-certified specialists. Urgent care clinicians can now consult specialists in real time during patient visits to validate diagnoses and treatment plans, a capability the company says can help members avoid unnecessary referrals and repeat appointments.
In addition, Teladoc has introduced real-time prescription benefit checks, enabling clinicians to see which medications are covered under a member’s health plan, along with co-pay amounts and preferred alternatives. This aims to reduce friction at the pharmacy and improve medication adherence.
Following a visit, patients may also receive referrals to in-network specialists, post-visit care team support, or enrollment in Teladoc’s internal or partner programs, including offerings for diabetes, hypertension, weight management and mental health therapy.
“As the pioneer in virtual care, we continue to innovate and raise expectations about the value that can be created in virtual visits,” Kelly Bliss, President of U.S. Group Health at Teladoc Health, said in a press release. “Our clinical expertise, purpose-built technology and operational scale are unmatched and enable us to deliver meaningful outcomes and measurable ROI for our customers.”
