Home-Use Low-Level Laser Therapy Shows Sustained Hair Growth Benefits in 12-Month Alopecia Study

A 12-month clinical study has found that a home-use, helmet-style low-level laser therapy (LLLT) device can significantly improve hair density and thickness in patients with androgenetic alopecia, reinforcing its potential as a safe and effective long-term treatment option.

The prospective, open-label study followed 68 individuals—51 men and 17 women—with mild to severe androgenetic alopecia. Participants were instructed to use a helmet-type LLLT device emitting red light wavelengths between 646 and 675 nanometers three times a week for 20 minutes per session over a 48-week period.

Researchers evaluated treatment outcomes using phototrichogram analysis at predefined intervals, alongside blinded global photographic assessments and patient-reported feedback. By the end of the study, average hair density had increased from 99.2 hairs per square centimeter at baseline to 124.2 hairs per square centimeter, representing a mean gain of 25 hairs per square centimeter. The improvement was statistically significant (p < 0.0001).

Hair shaft thickness also showed marked enhancement, rising from an average of 65.1 micrometers to 74.9 micrometers—an increase of approximately 15 percent. These gains were consistent across both sexes and all levels of disease severity.

Global photographic assessments indicated visible improvement in 59 percent of participants by week 48, while more than 85 percent reported satisfaction with the treatment. Importantly, no device-related adverse events were reported throughout the study, and adherence rates remained high, suggesting strong patient acceptance of the home-based therapy.

Low-level laser therapy has gained attention as a non-pharmacological alternative for hair loss treatment, but long-term data have been limited. The findings from this study provide evidence that sustained, at-home use of LLLT can deliver lasting improvements in hair growth with excellent tolerability.

Researchers concluded that 12 months of regular home-use LLLT supports its role as a safe, effective, and user-friendly long-term therapeutic option for individuals affected by androgenetic alopecia.
