A recent 12-month study confirms that home-based, helmet-style low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a safe and effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia, offering significant improvements in hair density and thickness.
The prospective, open-label study enrolled 68 patients—51 men and 17 women—with mild to severe androgenetic alopecia. Participants used a helmet-type LLLT device emitting red light (646–675 nm) three times per week for 20 minutes over 48 weeks.
Hair growth outcomes were measured using phototrichogram analyses, complemented by blinded global photographic assessments and patient-reported satisfaction surveys.
Results showed a substantial increase in hair density, from a baseline mean of 99.2 hairs/cm² to 124.2 hairs/cm² after 48 weeks, representing an average gain of 25 hairs/cm² (p < 0.0001). Hair shaft thickness also improved by approximately 15%, rising from 65.1 μm to 74.9 μm (p < 0.0001). Improvements were consistent across both sexes and all levels of alopecia severity.
By the end of the study, 59% of participants were rated as improved based on global photographs, while more than 85% reported satisfaction with the treatment. Importantly, there were no adverse events linked to the device, and adherence remained high throughout the trial.
The study’s findings support the long-term use of home-based LLLT as a nonpharmacologic, user-friendly option for individuals seeking to manage androgenetic alopecia safely and effectively.
