TV doctor and Strictly Come Dancing participant Dr Punam Krishan has revealed that she was diagnosed with breast cancer five months ago.
Despite her extensive medical knowledge, the Morning Live contributor admitted that nothing could have prepared her for the emotional impact of the diagnosis, describing the experience as a period of shock and trauma.
Dr Punam shared that she had an instinctive feeling that something was wrong, which prompted her to seek medical advice. She is now urging women to trust their instincts and undergo regular screenings, emphasizing that early detection can be life-saving.
Having completed her treatment, Dr Punam is now focusing on recovery, taking each day as it comes while navigating the healing process.
Medical experts stress the importance of recognizing the early warning signs of breast cancer. Primary symptoms may include:
- A lump or swelling in the breast, chest, or armpit
- Changes in breast skin, such as dimpling (similar to orange peel) or redness
- Alterations in the size or shape of one or both breasts
- Nipple discharge unrelated to pregnancy or breastfeeding, which may contain blood
- Changes in the appearance or shape of the nipple
- Persistent breast or armpit pain, unlike occasional, fleeting discomfort
Secondary breast cancer, which occurs when the disease spreads to other parts of the body, can present additional symptoms depending on the affected organ. Common sites for metastasis include the bones, liver, lungs, and brain.
Dr Punam’s openness about her journey highlights the critical role of awareness and early detection in the fight against breast cancer, offering encouragement to others who may be facing similar health challenges.
