TikTok’s Scalpcare Boom Puts Home Microneedling in the Spotlight for Hair Growth

by Shreeya

Once reserved for facial skincare routines, anti-ageing treatments are now extending beyond the complexion and onto the scalp. A growing number of consumers are investing in scalpcare, driven by social media trends that promise thicker, healthier hair through oils, serums and at-home microneedling devices.

The trend has gained significant traction on TikTok, where the hashtag #scalpcare has surpassed one billion views, reflecting rising interest in scalp, root and hair health. Among the most widely promoted tools are home dermarollers—also known as microneedling devices—which users claim can stimulate hair growth when used regularly.

Microneedling was once limited to professional clinic settings, but affordable at-home versions are now widely available through online retailers. These handheld devices feature roller heads embedded with dozens of fine needles designed to create controlled micro-injuries on the scalp. The process is intended to stimulate the skin’s natural repair response, including the activation of stem cells.

Because stem cells play a key role in hair regeneration, proponents argue that repeated microneedling can encourage thicker, fuller hair over time. But does the science support the claims circulating on social media?

According to Kevin Moore, a trichologist at Regrowz, the technique does have a clinical foundation. “Dermarolling was originally developed to treat acne scars, stretch marks and wrinkles,” Moore explains. “Over time, its benefits for male and female pattern hair loss have been identified, and it can also be used as a treatment for alopecia areata.”

Moore adds that microneedling works by stimulating collagen production in the skin, a process that supports scalp health. “Research indicates that scalp rolling can encourage stem cell activity within the hair follicles, which may promote hair growth,” he says. “In addition, microneedling can enhance the absorption and effectiveness of topical hair treatments and solutions.”

As the scalpcare movement continues to gain momentum online, experts suggest that while microneedling shows promise, users should approach at-home treatments carefully and follow proper hygiene and usage guidelines to avoid irritation or infection.
