A Boy George tribute artist from Blackpool has said a hair transplant has transformed his confidence and reignited his ambition to step out from behind famous personas and put himself “at the forefront of show business.”
Liam Halewood, 39, has spent more than two decades performing on stage, first as a drag artist in Liverpool at the age of 16 and later through a range of tribute acts, including comedian Alan Carr, Culture Club frontman Boy George, and a stint with a Village People tribute group. His career has also included an appearance on The X Factor in 2015 as part of his singing journey.
Despite his on-stage confidence, Halewood said he has long struggled privately with hair loss, which began when he was just 24. What started as thinning on the crown gradually progressed until he lost all the hair on the top of his head, leaving only hair around the sides. Although he eventually shaved his head, he said the look deeply affected his self-esteem.
“I feel like I’ve lived half of my life out as someone else,” Halewood explained, saying his receding hairline made it harder to feel comfortable as himself away from the spotlight. Over the years, he estimates he spent around £20,000 on cosmetic procedures such as Botox, fillers and dental work, but said his hair loss remained his biggest insecurity.
That changed earlier this year when his fiancé, Michael, surprised him with a hair transplant appointment at London’s Wimpole Clinic during their engagement party on February 8, 2025. By July, Halewood was undergoing the £5,500 procedure on Harley Street, a moment he described as both nerve-wracking and life-changing.
The transplant, which took around 10 hours, involved extracting hair follicles from donor areas and implanting them into thinning sections of his scalp. Halewood said the process was far less painful than he feared, even admitting he fell asleep during part of the procedure after being prescribed diazepam to manage anxiety and elevated blood pressure.
While the surgery itself was painless, the recovery was not without challenges. Halewood described the post-procedure itching during the healing phase as “horrendous,” saying it was more difficult to endure than pain. He was required to sleep upright, take steroids to aid recovery and carefully clean his scalp with saline solution to protect the newly implanted grafts.
Six months on, Halewood says the results have exceeded his expectations, making him feel “10 years younger” and far more confident. He has already booked a second transplant for next spring to further restore hair on his crown, and believes the change has given him renewed belief in himself beyond tribute performances.
Looking ahead, Halewood is eager to continue his career with a stronger sense of personal identity, while still celebrating the iconic figures he portrays on stage. With his wedding to Michael set for February 15, 2026, he says he is excited to walk down the aisle feeling confident in his suit — and with a full head of hair to match his renewed self-belief.
