Fortis Healthcare on Monday inaugurated a 36-bed in-patient mental health facility, Adayu, in Gurugram, marking the first of 10 such centers the hospital chain plans to establish across India over the next three years.
Designed to address the growing demand for psychiatric care, Adayu integrates a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counselors, arts-based therapists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and yoga practitioners, offering holistic mental health support.
India faces a significant mental health challenge, with one in seven people living with a mental disorder. The country has only four public mental health beds per 100,000 population, contributing to a treatment gap in which 70–90% of individuals do not receive adequate care or long-term support, Fortis noted.
“Adayu represents a transformative milestone in India’s mental healthcare journey, addressing long-standing gaps in infrastructure, investment, and systemic integration,” said Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, MD & CEO of Fortis Healthcare. He added that the facility signals the start of a broader effort to build a more inclusive mental health ecosystem nationwide.
Fortis plans to open its next dedicated mental health hospital in Mohali, Punjab, and expand to 10 facilities across the country within three years.
Samir Parikh, Chairperson of Fortis Healthcare’s mental health program, emphasized that Adayu reflects the hospital’s commitment to closing India’s mental health treatment gap and prioritizing mental well-being on par with other medical specialties.
