A new global analysis reveals that more than three-quarters of the world’s population is falling short of essential omega-3 intake, a gap that may elevate the risk of heart disease, cognitive decline, inflammation, and vision issues.
The study, published in Nutrition Research Reviews, was led by researchers from the University of East Anglia, University of Southampton, and Holland & Barrett. They reviewed omega-3 intake patterns across various countries and age groups. The findings showed that 76% of people worldwide are not meeting the recommended daily intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), two omega-3 fats crucial for heart health.
Low Omega-3 Intake and Its Consequences
The review analyzed global health recommendations and assessed how closely different populations adhere to them. The recommended daily intake for adults is at least 250 milligrams of EPA and DHA. However, many regions report much lower levels of consumption.
Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian based in New York, explained the significant health impacts of low omega-3 intake. She highlighted that inadequate omega-3 levels are linked to heart disease risks, including heart attacks and sudden cardiac death. Omega-3 deficiency is also associated with higher triglycerides, irregular heart rhythms, and plaque buildup in the arteries.
Additionally, low omega-3 levels can negatively affect brain function, accelerating cognitive decline and increasing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Routhenstein also noted that omega-3 deficiency may worsen inflammation in autoimmune conditions like psoriasis and harm eye health, as omega-3s play a vital role in maintaining retinal structure.
Improving Omega-3 Intake
To boost omega-3 levels, Routhenstein recommends understanding the necessary intake and food sources. The best dietary sources of EPA and DHA are oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, trout, and anchovies. For those who don’t eat fish regularly, omega-3 supplements can help raise EPA and DHA levels.
Routhenstein advised that supplementation should be personalized based on lab results, medications, and overall medical history. High-dose prescription omega-3 products have been shown to benefit high-risk populations, but regular supplements are generally safe for most people.
Assessing Omega-3 Levels
To accurately assess omega-3 status, Routhenstein suggests testing the omega-3 index, a blood test measuring EPA and DHA in red blood cells. A level of 8% or higher is associated with a lower cardiovascular risk, while levels below 4% are considered deficient.
