Winter Habits Can Affect Male Infertility and Sperm Health, Experts Say

by Shreeya

Winter may affect more than your mood and skin—it can influence male fertility. While cold itself doesn’t harm sperm, winter-related habits and environmental changes can impact sperm health.

Dr. Dimple Chudgar, Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Apollo Spectra in Mumbai, told the Times of India, “Winter can be challenging for some men. While male infertility has many causes, lifestyle patterns and environmental changes during colder months can affect how the body produces and maintains healthy sperm.”

How Winter Affects Fertility

Reduced sunlight in winter lowers vitamin D levels, essential for testosterone regulation and healthy sperm development. “Low vitamin D may lead to reduced sperm count and motility,” Dr. Chudgar said.

Indoor confinement, inactivity, and higher consumption of processed foods can cause weight gain, further affecting testosterone and sperm quality. Winter habits such as increased caffeine, tea, or alcohol intake can also contribute to dehydration and poorer sperm health.

Heat exposure is another factor. Dr. Chudgar explained, “Long hot showers and heating pads can reduce sperm production because testes require slightly cooler temperatures to function properly.” Stress, which may rise in winter, also affects hormone levels and sperm health.

Scientific Insights

Research supports these observations. A 2003 study in the Journal of Andrology found sperm concentration and normal morphology were higher in winter than in spring or summer. Similarly, a 2023 study in the Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences reported improved semen concentration and fewer defects in cooler temperatures.

Vitamin D deficiency also impacts sperm motility. A 2022 systematic review in Biomedicines highlighted that supplementation improves sperm motility, emphasizing the importance of sunlight exposure in winter.

Doctor’S Tips For Winter Fertility

Dr. Chudgar recommends these six steps for maintaining healthy sperm during colder months:

  1. Get at least 20 minutes of morning sunlight – supports testosterone and vitamin D levels.
  2. Avoid long hot baths or heating devices near the groin – prevents reduced sperm production.
  3. Eat a nutrient-rich diet – include nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and high-quality protein.
  4. Exercise 45 minutes daily – helps maintain hormone balance and healthy weight.
  5. Stay hydrated – dehydration can impair sperm quality.
  6. Limit alcohol and caffeine – these can reduce fertility and worsen dehydration.

Bottom line

Winter doesn’t directly harm sperm, but lifestyle, hormonal changes, and reduced sunlight can influence fertility. Conscious choices in sunlight exposure, diet, exercise, hydration, and heat management can help men maintain healthy sperm all year round.
