Blood samples from New Zealand men undergoing prostate biopsies could help develop a simple blood test for early prostate cancer detection.
Dr. Jim Smith, a researcher in pathology and molecular medicine at the University of Otago, has received a three-year, $260,000 grant from the Health Research Council of New Zealand (HRC). The funding will support the creation of a targeted DNA methylation-based blood test to detect prostate cancer.
New Zealand has some of the highest prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates in the world, with Māori communities experiencing disproportionately poor outcomes, Dr. Smith said.
“For many patients, decisions around screening, investigations, and treatment can be challenging,” he said. “Current detection tools are often costly, inaccurate, or not equally accessible to all at-risk patients.”
Dr. Smith will carry out the first comprehensive epigenetic analysis of blood samples from New Zealand men undergoing prostate biopsy. The findings will inform the development of the new blood test.
“Epigenetic markers, especially DNA methylation, are key drivers of prostate cancer and show promise as biomarkers for early detection,” he explained. “A reliable blood test could improve survival, reduce unnecessary procedures, and lower care costs.”
The project will involve collaboration with a broader team of researchers and partners.
