Researchers Discover Combination Therapy That Alleviates Autism Symptoms

Researchers in Taiwan have discovered that a low-dose mixture of zinc, serine, and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) can significantly reduce behavioral symptoms in multiple mouse models of autism. The breakthrough relies on the synergy of these three nutrients, which together restore neural communication and reduce hyperactivity in the brain’s emotional center.

Synergy is Crucial: The combination of zinc, serine, and BCAAs at low doses improved social behaviors, while each nutrient alone had no effect.

Brain Reset: The mixture normalized synaptic protein levels and reduced abnormal amygdala hyperactivity, a region critical for emotion and social processing.

Research Details

The study, led by Tzyy-Nan Huang and Ming-Hui Lin at Academia Sinica, Taiwan, was published December 2 in PLOS Biology. The researchers hypothesized that combining the three nutrients would be more effective than using them individually at higher doses.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) arises from abnormal neural development, affecting how neurons connect. Nutrition is known to influence neural connectivity, and zinc, serine, and BCAAs individually have positive effects on the brain.

The team tested the mixture in three mouse models of ASD, analyzing synapse-related protein expression, neural activity in the amygdala, and social behaviors. They found that the nutrient cocktail restored synaptic protein levels, reduced hyperactive neurons in the amygdala, and improved social interactions.

Expert Insights

Yi-Ping Hsueh, the senior author, said, “With hundreds of genes implicated in autism, a one-gene-one-therapy approach is impractical. Our findings show that a low-dose nutrient mixture can improve synaptic function and social behaviors across multiple models, offering a safer, practical strategy for long-term support.”

Co–first author Tzyy-Nan Huang added, “While high doses of individual nutrients can improve synaptic function, low doses alone are ineffective. The combination at low doses successfully restores synaptic proteomes and enhances social behaviors in three mouse models.”

Ming-Hui Lin noted, “Just seven days of treatment with the mixture significantly improved neuronal circuit activity and connectivity in real time, supporting the potential of low-dose nutrient combinations.”
