Morgan Geyser, known for stabbing a classmate in 2014 inspired by the fictional character Slender Man, could be returned to a mental institution after escaping from a Wisconsin group home. Authorities filed a petition to revoke her conditional release, which a Waukesha County judge agreed to keep sealed.
Geyser, 23, cut off her ankle monitor and fled with her transgender friend but was arrested in Illinois and did not contest extradition back to Wisconsin. If her conditional release is revoked, she may return to the Winnebago mental institution, where she spent most of the last eight years.
Geyser was originally committed to a mental institution after being found guilty by reason of mental disease or defect for nearly killing a classmate when she was 12. Earlier this year, a judge approved her release from the state mental facility to live in a group home with supervision.
However, her escape raised concerns, as she left with her 43-year-old friend and removed her electronic monitoring device. Wisconsin authorities now have 30 days to return her to custody, with possible new charges related to the escape.
The victim, Payton Leutner, survived a brutal stabbing that left her near death, with wounds narrowly missing major arteries. Geyser and her then-12-year-old accomplice had lured Leutner under the pretense of playing a game before the attack.
Despite her release, authorities and health officials had expressed apprehension about Geyser’s readiness to live outside a secure setting due to her behavior and interests related to violence. Leutner’s family stated they are safe and thanked law enforcement and supporters during this difficult time.
