Eli Lilly and Company announced that it will open a new Lilly Gateway Labs site in Philadelphia. The company aims to bring its collaborative research model to a city known for major breakthroughs in modern medicine.
The new site will take up 44,000 square feet inside 2300 Market, a newly built life sciences facility in Center City. The building is developed and operated by Breakthrough Properties. Early-stage biotech companies working in the space will have access to fully equipped wet labs as well as scientific support from Lilly experts. This support is a key feature of the Gateway Labs program.
Julie Gilmore, Ph.D., vice president and global head of Lilly Gateway Labs and Catalyze360 Portfolio Management, said Philadelphia has long played a major role in biotech progress. She noted the city’s leadership in early vaccine work, gene therapy, CAR-T technology, and Alzheimer’s research. Gilmore emphasized that young biotech companies need both advanced lab infrastructure and experienced scientific partners to navigate the path from discovery to early clinical development.
The expansion into Philadelphia aligns with Lilly’s strategy of placing Gateway Labs locations in communities where research strength and entrepreneurial energy are both strong. The city’s academic medical centers and diverse patient population have helped establish it as a top U.S. innovation hub. With the addition of Philadelphia, Gateway Labs now operates four major U.S. centers, joining sites in Boston, South San Francisco, and San Diego. Each location helps connect biotechs, investors, and other innovation partners to foster collaboration across the life sciences ecosystem.
Lilly Gateway Labs is one part of Lilly Catalyze360, which also includes Lilly Ventures, Lilly ExploR&D, and Lilly TuneLab.
