Study Forecasts Sharp Increase in Drug-Resistant Bloodstream Infections Across Europe by 2050

A new study published on November 4th in PLOS Medicineprojects a substantial increase in drug-resistant bloodstream infections across Europe over the next three decades, primarily driven by population aging.

Conducted by researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the analysis of 12 million bacterial susceptibility tests from 29 European countries provides crucial insights for targeting interventions and tracking progress against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – a growing global health crisis.

Methodology and Data Analysis

The research team analyzed routine blood culture susceptibility test data from 2010-2019, encompassing over 12 million bacterial infections from 29 European countries. Using this comprehensive dataset, researchers developed statistical models to project bloodstream infection rates through 2050, incorporating projected demographic changes. The study examined eight major bacterial pathogens and their resistance patterns to generate nationally specific forecasts.

The analysis reveals concerning trends:

Bloodstream infection rates are projected to increase significantly across Europe

The burden varies substantially between countries and bacterial-antibiotic combinations

Infection rates are expected to be higher in males than females

The most dramatic increases are projected in older populations (74+ years), while rates remain stable or decline in younger age groups

Models ignoring age and sex demographics may underestimate the future burden by missing critical population segments

Demographic Drivers and Public Health Implications

The research highlights that population aging serves as the primary driver of increasing infection rates. Older adults, particularly those over 65, show the steepest projected increases, meaning that simply preventing further growth in resistant bloodstream infections represents a significant public health achievement. The demographic shifts across Europe will substantially impact healthcare system capacities and require targeted preparedness strategies.

Policy Implications and International Targets

The study indicates that even with robust public health interventions, achieving the United Nations target of reducing drug-resistant infections by 10% by 2030 appears feasible for only approximately two-thirds of bacterial-antibiotic combinations. This underscores the challenge of meeting international AMR containment goals without more aggressive intervention strategies tailored to specific national and demographic contexts.

Research Applications and Future Directions

“This represents a major step forward in understanding how age and sex will impact the burden of drug-resistant infections across European countries in the coming years,” said co-author Catrin Moore.

The findings will help design targeted intervention studies for populations at highest risk, ultimately reducing mortality and morbidity associated with resistant infections. Future research will focus on developing more granular forecasting models and evaluating intervention effectiveness in high-burden populations.
