A comprehensive meta-analysis published in the journal Psychological Bulletin has found that healthy adults can maintain normal cognitive function during short-term fasts of up to 12 hours. The research, which synthesized data from 71 studies involving 3,484 participants, challenges common concerns about mental performance declining when meals are skipped.
The analysis revealed no consistent evidence that short-term fasting impairs mental acuity in areas such as memory recall, decision-making, reaction speed, and accuracy. “People who were fasting performed quite similarly to those who had eaten recently,” the lead researcher noted, indicating that cognitive stability is maintained in the absence of food intake.
However, the study identified important exceptions. Slight cognitive declines were observed when fasting periods extended beyond 12 hours, and children demonstrated noticeable performance decreases, reinforcing the established importance of breakfast for developing brains.
An interesting nuance emerged regarding context: fasting individuals showed performance differences only when tasks involved food-related stimuli, suggesting that hunger may act as a specific distraction rather than causing a broad cognitive deficit.
For healthcare providers and health-conscious adults, these findings support the safety of intermittent fasting practices for cognitive function, indicating it can be a viable dietary approach without significant concern for impairing mental performance.
