NIH Grant Supports Innovative Research on Hippocampus for Brain Health

Rodney Scott, MBChB, MRCP, DipStat, PhD, Division Chief of Neurology at Nemours Children’s Health, Delaware Valley, has been awarded the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director’s Transformative Research Award.

The five-year grant, totaling $2.6 million, will enable Dr. Scott to investigate dysfunction in the hippocampus, a critical brain region responsible for memory and emotion regulation, with the goal of identifying shared mechanisms underlying autism, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.

“In disorders like autism, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s, the hippocampus does not function properly. Current treatments target each condition individually, often with limited success,” Dr. Scott explained. “Our approach is to identify shared patterns of abnormal brain activity across these disorders. If successful, we aim to develop novel brain stimulation strategies to restore healthy hippocampal function across a range of neurological conditions.”

The NIH Transformative Research Awards are designed to promote interdisciplinary, high-risk, high-reward projects that challenge conventional paradigms. They support research with the potential to generate transformative advances in disease understanding, therapeutic development, and preventive strategies.

Dr. Scott’s project will combine advanced biological and computational methodologies to investigate hippocampal dysfunction. He will collaborate with co-principal investigator Matt Mahoney, PhD, Principal Computational Scientist at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Together, they plan to integrate experimental data with sophisticated computer models to pinpoint disruptions in the brain’s neural networks, which may be common across autism, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s. This dual approach—merging biological analysis with computational modeling—will allow the team to handle large-scale data sets efficiently and accelerate discovery.

Since joining Nemours Children’s in 2021, Dr. Scott has continued a distinguished career spanning hospitals in Zimbabwe, England, and the United States. He is recognized for his pioneering work in epilepsy treatment and management, as well as for applying complex adaptive systems theory to neurological disorders.

In addition to his role at Nemours, he serves as Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Delaware.

Dr. Scott’s work highlights a growing trend in neuroscience: shifting from disease-specific interventions to therapies targeting shared mechanisms. By focusing on the hippocampus, his team hopes to uncover pathways that could lead to more effective treatments for multiple brain disorders, potentially transforming care for millions of patients worldwide.
