HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. – Hamilton County Schools is formally requesting bids from mental health service providers. This move comes after the district faced parent criticism for ending its previous contract with the provider Centerstone.
The district announced it will advertise a “Request for Proposals” (RFP) to find new partners. The goal is to give families multiple options for student counseling services.
The decision follows the school board’s vote not to renew its agreement with Centerstone. Some board members expressed concerns about the vetting process for Centerstone employees. That termination abruptly ended services for more than 2,500 students.
The move worried many parents. One mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her child’s privacy, said she was initially “really concerned.” She described Centerstone as a “critical resource.”
School Superintendent Dr. Justin Robertson said the new approach prioritizes student well-being and family choice. “I want to see our district move forward in a way that meets the needs of all of our students and families,” Robertson stated.
The anonymous mother said she now feels relief. “As long as they’re vetted and the services are holistic… I’m fine with it,” she said.
The district is seeking providers who will partner at no cost to the school system. Proposals will be judged on the organization’s experience, service plans, and personnel protocols.
Some in the community support the expansion of options. Retired teacher Kimberly Hays said, “I think that it’s always good to have a choice, because not every counselor is going to fit every need.”
Meanwhile, Centerstone has started a petition to have its services reinstated.
Hamilton County Schools plans to bring a list of approved providers to the school board for a final vote in November.
