Prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men, particularly affecting 1 in 8 men during their lifetime. Early detection through a PSA test (Prostate-Specific Antigen) is a crucial step in identifying the disease early when treatment is most effective.

A Digital Resource for Patients and Families

SurvivorNet, a free digital information platform, provides comprehensive resources for those facing cancer. CEO Steve Alperin founded the company after his own family’s struggle to find clear guidance during his father’s illness. “We serve about 5 million people a month who need help making better decisions when they get sick and feeling less alone,” Alperin said.

Emmitt Smith Lends His Voice

NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith is hosting a series of short documentaries on SurvivorNet to raise awareness, a mission he took on after his father’s diagnosis. “After my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I learned the disease affects 1 out of 8 men,” Smith said.

The Critical Role of Early Detection

Medical experts emphasize the life-saving potential of early screening. Dr. Leonard Gomella of Jefferson Health stated, “Early detection of prostate cancer is very important… A simple blood test can save lives.” He highlighted that treatments for both localized and advanced prostate cancer have dramatically improved over the last decade.

Mobile Testing Reaches the Community

To increase access, Jefferson Health operates a community outreach truck where men can receive a free PSA blood test. This initiative is especially vital for Black men, who face a higher risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer. “Men don’t know they have it, and that’s why screening is good,” Dr. Gomella explained.

A Survivor’s Story of Hope

67-year-old John Buehler is a three-time prostate cancer survivor. After undergoing surgery and other treatments, he credits his supportive family and medical team for his health. “I’m still living awesome,” Buehler said. “And there’s not too much I can’t do.” His story underscores the message of hope and the importance of proactive health measures.
