How Service Dogs Help Veterans Manage PTSD Symptoms

by Shreeya

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects many veterans, often creating daily challenges that are invisible to others. Among the various treatment options, specially trained service dogs are proving to be a powerful support.

Adam Saltzman, a New Jersey Air Force veteran, has found help through his service dog, Cooper, a 4-year-old yellow lab. After serving 12 years in the Air Force and deployment to Kuwait, Saltzman was diagnosed with PTSD in 2018. He described his state at the time as “decimated” and struggling with little hope, despite years of treatment including hospitalization.

Saltzman was matched with Cooper through K9s For Warriors, a nonprofit that connects veterans with service dogs trained to assist with mental health challenges. Cooper offers Saltzman a consistent sense of security and plays a crucial role in calming his panic attacks.

“He seems to focus on my breathing,” Saltzman explains. “If she sees me starting to escalate, she comes to me, nudges me, and helps me calm down.” This focused attention helps lower Saltzman’s anxiety by redirecting his stress toward the dog.

Healthcare professionals emphasize that managing PTSD involves recognizing triggers and developing routines that restore control and calm. Saltzman and Cooper have built daily routines that reinforce both safety and emotional stability.

Saltzman credits Cooper with improving nearly every part of his life, saying the dog’s impact is “unmeasurable.” Cooper has helped him become a better husband and father while reclaiming his family life.

K9s For Warriors has successfully paired over 1,000 veterans with service dogs and rescued more than 2,000 dogs, some of which are now assisting first responders.
