A golf tournament in Kingston has raised a record $176,530 to support prostate cancer treatment at Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC). Now in its fifth year, the annual Power of Hope Golf Tournament took place on August 25 with 148 golfers participating, slightly surpassing the expected turnout.
Organizer Mike Laframboise, who underwent prostate cancer surgery at KHSC in 2019, launched the tournament inspired by his experience with the hospital’s advanced robotic surgery system, the da Vinci robot—acquired through charitable donations.
Motivated to give back on a larger scale, he modeled the event after the successful Rose of Hope golf tournament, which has raised over $3.5 million for breast cancer causes.
To date, the Power of Hope tournament has raised more than $740,000 to support prostate cancer care. Beyond fundraising, Laframboise emphasizes the event’s role in raising awareness about prostate cancer and encouraging early testing.
He regularly shares his personal story to comfort patients and promote the importance of PSA screening, aiming to help save lives through early detection.
Funds from this year’s tournament will contribute to purchasing a second da Vinci robot for KHSC. Laframboise highlights that this new robotic system will enhance surgical options not only for prostate cancer but also for a range of cancers including kidney, gynecological, lung, pancreatic, liver, biliary, and gallbladder cancers, as well as heart surgeries. He says the expanded access to advanced technology will greatly benefit the Kingston community.
