Smartwatches May Help Detect PTSD From Media Exposure After Trauma

by Shreeya

A groundbreaking three-year study involving more than 5,000 Israeli residents reveals that extensive exposure to media coverage of traumatic events can significantly increase the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Media Exposure and PTSD Risk

While PTSD is often associated with individuals directly exposed to trauma, this study sheds light on the risks for those indirectly affected through media consumption.

Researchers examined the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, mass attacks in Israel. They found that participants who consumed large amounts of news or graphic videos on platforms such as Telegram and TikTok showed a significantly higher risk of PTSD.

Among participants, PTSD rates peaked at 22.9–36.0% two months after the attacks, and persisted at 15.9–24.7% seven months later.

Smartwatches as Early Detection Tools

The research leveraged data from smartwatches and daily questionnaires, revealing striking differences between those who developed PTSD and those who did not. Individuals at higher risk showed:

  • Sharper increases in stress levels
  • Noticeable declines in mood
  • Reduced physical activity
  • Disrupted sleep quality

These measurable changes emerged within the first week after the traumatic events, highlighting the potential role of smartwatches in early detection of PTSD and timely intervention.

Implications for Public Health

“Indirect exposure through media can have serious psychological consequences,” said Prof. Yamin. “Our findings underscore the importance of early detection and the potential of wearable technologies to assist in monitoring mental health following traumatic events.”

The authors note that further research, including longer-term follow-ups and formal PTSD screening by healthcare professionals, is needed to expand on these results.
