Two-Thirds of Men Under 40 Report Erectile Dysfunction, Study Finds

by Shreeya

A growing number of young men are facing erectile dysfunction (ED), with recent data revealing that two-thirds of men aged 25 to 34 have experienced difficulties achieving or maintaining an erection. This emerging trend has been described by experts as “a silent epidemic.”

Sexual health specialists at Chemist4U conducted a survey of over 2,000 men to understand the prevalence of ED, prompted by an unprecedented surge in online searches related to Viagra—a common medication for treating ED. Over the past 90 days, search queries about Viagra’s effectiveness and usage timing have skyrocketed by more than 5,000 percent.

While erectile dysfunction has traditionally been most common among older men, this study found that over half of those aged 18 to 24 have also suffered from ED symptoms.

Ian Budd, a prescribing pharmacist at Chemist4U, highlighted the widespread nature of the condition in the UK: “Our survey reveals that over half of UK men report erection difficulties. Recent trends in online searches suggest many are seeking reliable information on causes and treatment.”

Experts attribute the increase in ED among younger men to a combination of physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors, including stress, alcohol consumption, insufficient exercise, and cardiovascular health. Budd emphasized the importance of early assessment and professional guidance, noting that ED can sometimes signal underlying health issues such as high blood pressure, cholesterol imbalances, hormone disorders, or mental health challenges like depression and anxiety.

Though isolated episodes of ED are common and typically not worrisome, persistent symptoms merit medical evaluation. Treatment options, including medications like Viagra, can significantly alleviate symptoms and reduce anxiety related to sexual performance.

Budd encourages men to monitor their symptoms carefully and adopt lifestyle changes that support sexual health. “You don’t have to face ED alone or in silence. Effective treatments exist, and small lifestyle adjustments can have a significant impact. Open communication with your partner also helps reduce the emotional toll,” he advised. “The most important step is addressing the issue as early as possible.”

Geographically, southern UK cities showed higher rates of ED, with over 70 percent of men in Brighton reporting symptoms, followed by those in Bath. In contrast, Bristol had one of the lowest rates, with only 49 percent admitting to experiencing erectile difficulties.

The study also revealed that younger men tend to seek help online rather than consult medical professionals directly, with only one in three opting for a doctor’s advice initially. Alarmingly, over 10 percent reported they would not seek help at all. Nonetheless, in-person consultations remain the most preferred option for future care, chosen by more than 43 percent of respondents.

In addition to online support and over-the-counter solutions offered by Chemist4U, doctors warn that excessive pornography consumption may contribute to rising ED rates in young men. Frequent viewing can “train” the brain to require artificial stimuli, reduce normal arousal sensitivity, and foster unrealistic expectations about sexual performance, which in turn fuels anxiety.

As erectile dysfunction increasingly affects younger populations, experts stress the importance of awareness, early intervention, and open dialogue to counter this growing health concern.
