Could GLP-1 Weight-Loss Medications Be the Next ‘Everything Drug’?

by Shreeya

GLP-1 receptor agonists — including semaglutides such as Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatides like Mounjaro and Zepbound — were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity.

But emerging research suggests these widely used weight-loss medications may have far broader benefits, prompting some experts to wonder if they could evolve into an “everything drug.”

A growing list of medical uses

Dr. Angela Fitch, co-founder and chief medical officer of the Boston-based healthcare company Knownwell, urged caution against such sweeping labels. Still, she acknowledged the expanding role of GLP-1s.

“GLP-1s are currently approved for treating obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease prevention, metabolic fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease in diabetes patients, and sleep apnea,” Fitch told Fox News Digital.

She added that early findings point to potential benefits for neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and even for addiction treatment. “They lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and decrease visceral fat,” she said. “These therapies significantly improve quality of life — with many more indications on the horizon.”

Potential health benefits

According to Fitch, the primary advantages of GLP-1s include:

  • Effective weight loss and maintenance
  • Better blood sugar control and diabetes prevention
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved cholesterol and lipid levels
  • Reduced risk of heart and kidney disease
  • “These are not conveniences,” she emphasized. “They are the holy grail of modern medicine.”

Dr. Brett Osborn, a Florida neurosurgeon and longevity expert, echoed that sentiment. “These medications don’t just treat obesity,” he said. “They’re already showing promise for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and addiction-related conditions.”

Risks and side effects

Despite their promise, GLP-1 medications are not without drawbacks. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, including nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating — especially during dose escalation.

“These symptoms often improve, but they can limit use for some patients,” Fitch noted. More serious, though rare, complications include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney injury linked to dehydration.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News medical analyst, has also warned of long-term uncertainties. “They’re useful in lowering risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even cancer,” he said, “but they’re not one-size-fits-all — and they’re usually not first-line therapy.”

Not all GLP-1s are alike

While all GLP-1 agonists target the same pathway, their effectiveness and safety profiles differ. Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) is considered the most potent for weight loss and blood sugar control and was recently approved to treat metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), a severe fatty liver disease.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist, has demonstrated even greater weight loss in clinical trials. It is already approved for sleep apnea and is being studied for other conditions.

“Patients who plateau on Wegovy often restart progress with Zepbound,” Osborn said. “It targets two biochemical pathways, making it a superior agent in many cases.”

Not a ‘magic bullet’

Experts stress that GLP-1s work best when paired with healthy lifestyle choices. “Diet, exercise, sleep, and behavioral changes remain essential,” Fitch said.

She also cautioned against self-prescribing. “These medications require consistent clinical oversight to ensure safety and effectiveness,” she said.

For chronic conditions like obesity and diabetes, Fitch recommends long-term or even indefinite treatment, though lowering the dose may be an option once patients reach a healthy weight.

“Ultimately, patients should work closely with their doctors to determine the safest, most effective course of action,” she said.
