A new review published in Nutrients suggests that honey may offer protective effects against Alzheimer’s disease (AD), though evidence remains limited to laboratory and animal studies.
Researchers analyzed 27 original studies exploring honey’s impact on Alzheimer’s-related processes, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and the buildup of amyloid-beta plaques and tau tangles—two hallmarks of the disease. They found that honey’s rich mix of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, consistently demonstrated neuroprotective activity in preclinical models.
The findings highlight that different types of honey—ranging from Manuka and Tualang to Chestnut and Avocado—vary in their protective effects, depending on their bioactive composition. For instance, chestnut honey was found to shield mitochondria in brain cells from glutamate-induced damage, preserving cellular energy production vital for neuron health. Some honeys even delayed amyloid-induced paralysis in genetically modified worms and reduced amyloid accumulation in mouse models.
Beyond targeting amyloid plaques, certain honeys also inhibited enzymes linked to memory and neurodegeneration, including acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase. These effects align with mechanisms used in current symptomatic Alzheimer’s treatments.
However, the review also noted unexpected results: in some tau-related worm models, honey worsened mobility. Researchers suggest this could be due to its natural sugars rather than a direct effect on tau pathology.
Despite encouraging preclinical data, the review underscores a major limitation—no human clinical trials have yet examined honey’s role in Alzheimer’s. Without such studies, optimal dosing, safety, and standardization remain unclear.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia worldwide, marked by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. With current treatments only offering modest symptom relief, researchers continue to explore diet-based and lifestyle interventions for prevention and management.
The review concludes that honey is a promising natural candidate for Alzheimer’s prevention and therapy in theory, but emphasizes that well-designed human trials are urgently needed before any recommendations can be made.
