For years, scientists have puzzled over why boys are diagnosed with autism and ADHD at nearly three times the rate of girls. New research from the University of Rochester now sheds light on a potential factor: heightened male vulnerability to environmental toxins during brain development.
The study focuses on “forever chemicals,” a class of persistent substances found in plastics, clothing, and even drinking water. These chemicals, which can take thousands of years to break down, have been linked to cancer, infertility, and birth defects.
Researchers suggest they may also disrupt brain signaling, leading to long-term behavioral changes such as social anxiety, hyperactivity, and difficulty following instructions.
Specifically, the team studied a chemical called PFHxA, commonly used in stain-resistant fabrics and paper food packaging. Experiments on baby mice exposed to the chemical through their mother’s milk revealed striking differences between sexes.
Male mice exhibited decreased activity, heightened anxiety, and memory problems, while female mice showed no comparable effects.
Alarmingly, these behavioral changes persisted long after initial exposure, highlighting the potential for long-lasting neurological impact. The researchers called their findings “concerning,” particularly because PFHxA is often marketed as a safer alternative to older “forever chemicals.”
PFAS compounds like PFHxA are pervasive in everyday household items, from cookware to fast-food wrappers, and can remain in human tissue and the environment for years or even decades.
This study adds to growing evidence that early exposure may contribute to the higher prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in boys.
