The global population living with Parkinson’s disease has doubled over the past 25 years, yet methods for monitoring and treating the neurological disorder remain outdated.
Clinicians typically rely on subjective rating scales, and a shortage of trained specialists means many patients wait months—or even years—between clinic visits. This gap often leaves patients uncertain about the progression of their disease or the effectiveness of their medications.
Now, Stanford Medicine researchers have introduced a portable, smartphone-connected device that enables patients to track Parkinson’s symptoms from home with quantitative, reproducible results.
The device, paired with a digital platform called Quantitative DigitoGraphy Care, converts subtle finger movements into detailed data that clinicians can use to guide treatment remotely.
A study published online August 12, 2025, in Nature highlights the device’s effectiveness. Parkinson’s patients demonstrated strong compliance, reflecting the tool’s ease of use.
Data collected through the device matched results from traditional in-person assessments, accurately reflecting symptom severity and disease progression.
Helen Bronte-Stewart, MD, the John E. Cahill Family Professor and a professor of neurology and neurosciences, led the research. Funding came from multiple sources, including a Wu Tsai Neuroscience Institute Translational grant, the Fogarty Innovation program, and a Stanford Medicine Catalyst award.
Addressing Long-Standing Monitoring Challenges
“Until now, monitoring Parkinson’s required in-person exams,” Bronte-Stewart said. Tremors and bradykinesia—the characteristic slowness of movement—are evaluated on clinical rating scales, while rigidity is assessed manually by the physician. Only about 40% of Parkinson’s patients ever see a neurologist, and appointments are often spaced months apart.
Furthermore, fellowship-trained movement disorder specialists, who represent just 0.14% of physicians, are the only doctors extensively trained in Parkinson’s motor assessment.
Monitoring Anywhere, Anytime
The device is lightweight and portable, pairing with a smartphone or tablet to allow testing anywhere. Results are transmitted in real-time to healthcare providers, enabling continuous symptom tracking and treatment adjustments.
Recent research demonstrated the system’s ability to monitor symptom changes in response to medication and detect involuntary tremors with 98% sensitivity. Such high-resolution data promises to standardize patient assessments, minimize the subjectivity of traditional scales, and enhance care between clinic visits.
