Mental Health Recovery Stories Fuel Opposition to Euthanasia Law

by Shreeya

Tamara Jansen, Member of Parliament, has introduced Bill C-218 in the Canadian House of Commons aiming to reverse the law allowing euthanasia for individuals suffering solely from mental illness.

This law is set to take effect on March 17, 2027, sparking concern and opposition among mental health advocates and affected individuals.

Kathryn D’hondt shares her personal journey, highlighting the complex realities of mental illness and recovery. Diagnosed with multiple mental health conditions, including schizo-affective disorder and bipolar disorder type II, she once felt trapped in unbearable pain that seemed to offer no hope.

At her darkest, she even attempted suicide and endured severe symptoms like panic attacks, night terrors, and psychotic episodes.

Despite the immense challenges, Kathryn’s story embodies resilience. Over time, with the right support and treatment, she healed and reclaimed her life.

She recently celebrated marriage and is expecting her first child. She finished school, earned a diploma, and has sustained full-time employment for years, no longer dependent on medications or consumed by panic attacks.

Kathryn reflects on how different her fate could have been if euthanasia had been available as an option during her crisis. She fears it would have ended her life prematurely, a loss that would deny the possibility of recovery that became her reality.

The conversation around euthanasia for mental illness raises profound ethical and health care questions. Advocates like Kathryn and many Canadians believe that quality mental health services—not assisted death—should be the priority.

They argue that Canadians deserve compassionate support and hope, not a legal option that may prematurely end lives at their most vulnerable moments.

Bill C-218 seeks to protect those with mental illnesses from euthanasia, emphasizing the need for better care and the dignity of living through suffering with comprehensive support rather than choosing death. This bill highlights a crucial debate on how society values and treats mental health, with voices calling for healing over harm.
