Sami Sheen, daughter of Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen, is using her platform to raise awareness about obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In a candid TikTok video shared with her 192,300 followers, the 21-year-old opened up about her experience living with the disorder, challenging the common myths many people still believe.
Sheen expressed frustration over how often OCD is misunderstood and misused in everyday language. “Nothing aggravates me more than when someone’s like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so OCD, I need to keep my room clean and organized,’” she said. According to Sami, that’s not what the disorder is really about.
Living with OCD: More Than Just Being Neat
To explain her symptoms, Sami described how OCD affects her thinking and daily behavior. One example involved grocery shopping. Even if she buys food that is clearly labeled as fresh, she still believes it might be expired.
“I read the expiration date over and over and over,” she said. “But I still convince myself it’s a fake date and the food is actually expired. Then I think I’ll get really sick if I eat it, so I throw it away and just starve.”
This kind of thinking is common among people with OCD. According to the Mayo Clinic, OCD causes a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are repeated, unwanted thoughts, while compulsions are behaviors people feel they must do to ease their anxiety.
What OCD Symptoms Can Look Like
Sami’s video helps viewers understand that OCD isn’t just about being clean or organized. It’s a serious mental health condition that can take many forms. Some of the common symptoms of OCD include:
- Checking behaviors – like making sure the stove is off multiple times
- Fear of contamination – leading to repeated handwashing or cleaning
- Intrusive thoughts – often disturbing or irrational ideas that are hard to control
- Mental rituals – silently repeating words or numbers to feel safe
- Reassurance seeking – asking others the same question over and over
- Avoidance – refusing to touch or use certain items because of fear
In Sami’s case, her symptoms involve health anxiety and distrust of her own logic. Despite knowing that her food is fresh, obsessive thoughts convince her that it’s not. That fear leads to compulsive actions like throwing food away or avoiding meals altogether.
Followers Relate to Her Story
Her TikTok quickly went viral, with over 50,000 views and nearly 3,000 likes. Many viewers thanked her for being open and honest. Several people left comments describing their own struggles with similar thought patterns.
One person commented, “I’m so OCD that even though I’ve never had any allergies, I still set a 15-minute timer after every first bite just in case.” Another wrote, “People think OCD is just about cleaning. It’s so much more.”
The comments revealed a wide range of experiences, showing that OCD symptoms vary from person to person but always involve mental stress and a need to feel safe.
Ongoing Health Struggles Beyond OCD
This is not the first time Sami has talked about her health publicly. In June, she shared that she plans to remove her breast implants. She believes they are the cause of several symptoms she’s experienced over the last two years, including sensitivity to temperature and severe anxiety. She suspects she may have breast implant illness (BII), a condition that some women report after undergoing breast augmentation.
“I’ve been having health issues for nearly two years now,” Sami said in an Instagram Story. “Finally discovered that I have breast implant illness.”
Mental Health in the Spotlight
Sami’s openness comes at a time of transition for her family. Her mother, actress Denise Richards, recently separated from Aaron Phypers. While Sami has not spoken directly about the divorce, she did share messages in early July about recognizing toxic relationships.
Her recent posts suggest she’s focused on personal healing and emotional well-being. By speaking out, Sami is helping others understand the reality of OCD, pushing back against stereotypes, and encouraging more honest conversations about mental health.
