A newly declassified intelligence report has brought to light allegations that Russian intelligence possessed information about former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s purported mental health struggles and use of “heavy tranquilizers” during the 2016 presidential campaign—details described as “extraordinarily alarming” to former President Barack Obama and senior Democratic leaders, according to documents released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
The report, prepared by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in 2020 and declassified recently, draws from a limited-access CIA vault investigation into 2016 election-related intelligence. It centers on claims from Democratic National Committee (DNC) communications, allegedly obtained by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, that highlight concerns about Clinton’s mental and emotional state.
Key among the allegations is that Clinton suffered from “intensified psycho-emotional problems,” including “uncontrolled fits of anger, aggression, and cheerfulness”—symptoms severe enough to prompt a daily regimen of “heavy tranquilizers,” the report states. Tranquilizers, typically prescribed to manage anxiety, tension, or mood disturbances, are noted in medical contexts as treatments for conditions that impair daily functioning.
The report emphasizes that Clinton’s mental health details were guarded in “strictest secrecy,” with even close advisors kept in the dark. Senior Democrats, including Obama, viewed her condition as posing a “serious negative impact” on her election prospects, the documents claim.
These revelations are part of a broader declassified investigation that challenges the 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which asserted Russian President Vladimir Putin favored Donald Trump. DNI Gabbard, in a White House briefing, criticized former CIA Director John Brennan for prioritizing a “false narrative” about Putin’s preferences while downplaying intelligence about Clinton’s alleged mental health struggles and medication use.
Gabbard noted that DNC emails referenced in the report provided specific details about Clinton’s “psycho-emotional problems” and tranquilizer regimen, framing this as critical information overlooked by the intelligence community. She accused Brennan and others of relying on discredited sources (like the Steele dossier) to distract from such details.
The focus on mental health in the report aligns with broader discussions about public figures’ well-being, as voters and leaders increasingly scrutinize how mental and emotional states may impact decision-making.
