Can You Do Pushups Daily? Experts Break It Down

by chenlulu

Daily routines bring structure to chaotic lives—whether it’s a morning coffee ritual, a lunchtime walk, or a pre-bed TV show. For those prioritizing strength training, a daily pushup habit is a common go-to, especially for maintaining baseline upper-body strength.

But is this practice both safe and effective? Overuse injuries, muscle imbalances, and unproductive “junk volume” are real risks, making it worth examining the pros and cons.

Experts confirm: Technically, daily pushups are acceptable—but with critical caveats to ensure safety and results.

Keys to Safe, Effective Daily Pushups

First, avoid isolating pushups. “You can’t train pushups in a vacuum every day,” says Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S., Men’s Health fitness director.

Many fall into the trap of viewing pushups as a simple daily upper-body exercise, expecting gains without balancing the workload. This can lead to muscle or postural imbalances. The fix? Pair pushups with back-targeting and pulling exercises (the opposite of pushing motions).

Samuel recommends row variations using dumbbells, kettlebells, or even a heavy backpack to engage back muscles. Without weights, try the T Superman exercise.

For well-rounded fitness, Kurt Ellis, C.S.C.S., owner of Beyond Numbers Performance, suggests adding pressing and pulling moves in different planes—like overhead presses, pullups, or chinups—to balance chest musculature.

Form is non-negotiable. Ellis emphasizes trunk stiffness: No sagging midsections or overextended lower backs. “Everything should move as one unit,” he says.

Beginners should start with incline pushups (hands on a bench) to maintain core engagement, avoiding knee-drops (which shorten the lever and reduce core work). As strength builds, adjust tempo for challenge, try advanced variations, or add resistance (weighted vests, plates).

How Many Reps Should You Do?

Ellis advises varying daily reps—e.g., 75 one day, 20 the next—to avoid overexertion. Stop if pain (beyond normal soreness) occurs. Ultimately, total reps depend on volume (daily amount) and intensity (external loads). With balance, recovery, and moderation, a daily pushup habit can be a healthy fitness staple.
