Why More Men Are Choosing Plastic surgery?

by Shreeya

Plastic surgery is no longer just a women’s domain. According to the newly released 2024 data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more men than ever are seeking surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance their appearance, confidence, and professional edge.

Despite economic uncertainty, demand for cosmetic procedures has remained strong, with men’s surgeries showing notable growth.

In a year still marked by inflation and cautious spending, the overall number of aesthetic surgeries across genders grew by 1%. But what’s particularly striking is that plastic surgery among men increased by 3.4%, outpacing the growth seen in women (1%).

Though men still only represent 7% of all cosmetic surgeries, that number is up from previous years, reflecting a growing cultural shift in attitudes about male aesthetics and self-care.

The Most Popular Surgical Procedures for Men

Leading the charge in 2024 are gynecomastia surgery and liposuction, the top two surgical procedures performed on men. Gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, saw an impressive 11% increase, the highest growth rate among all procedures for either gender.

For many men, correcting gynecomastia isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a psychological and social boost that helps restore confidence.

Liposuction continues to be a male favorite, particularly procedures targeting the flanks and lower abdomen. High-definition liposuction aimed at sculpting the abdominal muscles—commonly referred to as “ab etching”—is gaining traction among men looking to complement their gym routines with body contouring enhancements.

Other increasingly popular procedures include eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), rhinoplasty (nose surgery), and facelifts. These facial surgeries are favored by men for their ability to subtly restore a more youthful, refreshed appearance without dramatic changes. Interestingly, men now account for 34% of all otoplasties (ear surgeries), 26% of cheek implants, and 22% of chin implants, indicating a growing interest in facial structure enhancement.

Non-Surgical Procedures: Minimal Downtime, Maximum Impact

Minimally invasive cosmetic treatments are also trending upward, especially among men who prefer subtle results with little recovery time. In 2024, non-surgical procedures for men increased by 2.7%, slightly higher than the 1.5% growth across genders.

Botulinum toxin injections, such as Botox®, remain the most popular non-surgical option, with a 4% increase. Botox helps reduce wrinkles and lines, providing a polished look for professional and social interactions. Also rising in popularity are laser skin treatments and resurfacing procedures, signaling that men are becoming more proactive about skincare.

Dermal fillers, including both hyaluronic acid (HA) and non-HA injectables, are gaining popularity as well, especially for enhancing the jawline, cheeks, and chin. Non-HA fillers jumped by 11%, showing strong interest in subtle, long-lasting facial definition.

Who’s Driving the Trend?

From millennials to boomers, men across generations are taking a new approach to personal care. Millennial and Gen Z men, heavily influenced by social media and image-conscious culture, are turning to preventive treatments and facial refinement. Meanwhile, Gen X and baby boomers are focusing on rejuvenation to maintain competitiveness in the workplace and beyond.

Fitness-focused men of all ages are increasingly using procedures like liposuction and ab etching to complement their physical training and improve confidence. The convergence of health, aesthetics, and mental well-being is shifting plastic surgery into the mainstream for modern men.

Conclusion

Plastic surgery is no longer taboo for men. Whether it’s a few Botox injections, liposuction, or facial contouring, more men are embracing the idea that looking good plays a role in feeling good—and staying confident both socially and professionally.

Still, experts emphasize the importance of safety. Anyone considering a cosmetic procedure should consult a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure personalized care, safe outcomes, and natural-looking results.
