Autistic Adults Face Higher Risk of Mental Health Hospital Readmissions

by Shreeya

A recent study from Drexel University’s A.J. Drexel Autism Institute reveals that autistic adults are nearly 1.5 times more likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days after a mental health hospitalization compared to adults with other conditions.

In 2019, over one-third of hospital admissions for autistic adults were due to mental health issues, with schizophrenia being the most common reason. The study highlights the need for improved outpatient care and support systems to reduce these readmission rates.

Key Findings:

36% of hospital admissions for autistic adults in 2019 were for mental health conditions.

Schizophrenia was the leading cause of these admissions, accounting for 30%.

Autistic adults were nearly 1.5 times more likely to be readmitted within 30 days compared to those with ADHD, intellectual disabilities, or other mental health conditions.

Women with autism exhibited higher readmission rates than men, suggesting potential gaps in care and support.

Adults with Medicare and those with co-occurring substance use disorders or schizophrenia had higher readmission rates.

Recommendations:

The study emphasizes the importance of accessible and tailored outpatient mental health care for autistic adults. Addressing diagnostic overshadowing and ensuring that clinicians are adequately trained to recognize and treat co-occurring mental health conditions in autistic individuals are crucial steps toward improving health outcomes.

The findings underscore the need for systemic changes to improve mental health care access and quality for autistic adults, particularly for women and those with co-occurring conditions. Implementing these recommendations could lead to better health outcomes and reduced hospital readmission rates for this population.
