As of local time July 15th, Sudan’s Ministry of Health released the latest epidemic report showing that since the country’s new cholera outbreak began in July 2024, the spread of the epidemic has reached 17 out of 18 states nationwide, with a worrying scope of coverage.
To date, the cumulative number of reported infections has surged to 87,762, including 2,264 fatalities—each number representing a family’s sorrow. In the past week alone, there were 674 new infections and 13 deaths, indicating that the epidemic continues to escalate.
Facing such a severe situation, the Sudanese Ministry of Health stated that health authorities are continuously implementing emergency interventions in some severely affected areas. Medical staff and epidemic prevention workers are racing against time, attempting to prevent the further spread of the epidemic through a series of control measures, building a life defense line for local residents.
Looking back at the context of the raging epidemic, since April 15, 2023, armed conflicts broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in the capital Khartoum. The fighting quickly spread to other parts of the country and has persisted for nearly two years. The prolonged conflict has caused devastating damage to Sudan’s already fragile healthcare system, with issues such as damaged hospital facilities, shortage of medical supplies, and loss of medical personnel following one after another.
To make matters worse, the conflict has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis, with a large number of people displaced, living in hardship, and unable to access basic sanitation conditions.
Meanwhile, seasonal heavy rains and floods have provided a breeding ground for the spread of pathogens. The multiple disasters has ultimately led to the large-scale spread of cholera, dengue fever, and other infectious diseases in Sudan, plunging this war-torn country into a deeper crisis.
