Healthy Fitness Routine of West End Actor James Olivas

by Shreeya

Staying healthy isn’t optional when you’re performing night after night on one of the world’s most iconic stages. For actor James Olivas, fitness and injury prevention are essential parts of his daily routine—especially as he takes on the physically intense role of Juan Peron in the West End revival of Evita.

Performing in a lead role on stage requires more than just strong vocals and acting talent—it demands endurance, strength, and the ability to move with control and confidence. For Olivas, this means early morning workouts, mobility drills, and a focus on physical resilience.

“My day usually starts with a bodybuilding-style workout that targets muscle strength and definition,” Olivas says. “Because rehearsals run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., I train in the morning and add cardio to build stamina. There’s a lot of movement in my scenes, so I have to make sure my body can keep up night after night.”

Olivas emphasizes hypertrophy training, using high weight and low volume to build muscle, combined with cardio to support performance endurance. But for him, health goes beyond aesthetics. “I need to look powerful, but I also need to move freely on stage without risking injury,” he adds. “Mobility is a huge part of my routine. I can’t afford to get hurt.”

This level of commitment reflects a broader understanding of holistic health—balancing strength, flexibility, and recovery. “Everything has to work in harmony,” he says, “because I can’t just rest an injury. I need to be stage-ready every single night.”

For actors like Olivas, fitness isn’t just about image. It’s a foundation for stamina, injury prevention, and overall wellness—crucial in the high-demand world of live performance.
