CDC Expands RSV Vaccine Access to Some Adults Aged 50 and Older

by Shreeya

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has broadened access to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine, now recommending it for certain high-risk adults starting at age 50, down from the previous age threshold of 60.

This update, reflected on the CDC’s website as of June 25, follows guidance from a recently dismissed advisory panel of vaccine experts.

RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can lead to serious complications, especially in infants and older adults. The CDC currently recommends RSV vaccination for pregnant women at risk, a one-time shot for adults aged 75 and older, and for adults 60 and above with underlying health conditions that increase their risk of severe disease.

In April, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) advised expanding RSV vaccination to include high-risk adults starting at age 50. However, the CDC lacked a permanent director to finalize this recommendation, and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had not yet acted on it at that time.

Last month, Kennedy dismissed all 17 members of the ACIP and appointed a new seven-member panel, which includes several vaccine skeptics. This new committee has raised concerns among medical professionals by questioning established vaccine science and initiating reviews of the children’s vaccine schedule. Notably, the new panel has not revisited RSV vaccine recommendations for older adults.

Despite these changes, the CDC website now confirms that Kennedy has adopted the previous panel’s recommendation to extend RSV vaccination to high-risk adults in their 50s, making it an official CDC guideline.

What This Means for You

If you are 50 or older and have health conditions that increase your risk for severe RSV infection—such as chronic lung disease, heart disease, or a weakened immune system—consult your healthcare provider about getting the RSV vaccine. This preventive measure can help reduce the risk of severe respiratory illness during RSV season.

Practical Tips for Staying Healthy

  • Maintain good hand hygiene to reduce the spread of RSV and other respiratory viruses.
  • Avoid close contact with sick individuals during peak RSV season.
  • Stay up to date with recommended vaccinations, including flu and COVID-19 shots.
  • Discuss with your doctor whether RSV vaccination is appropriate for your health status.

By expanding vaccine access, the CDC aims to protect more adults from potentially severe RSV complications, promoting healthier communities and reducing hospitalizations.
