Bangladesh continues to face a growing dengue outbreak, with two more deaths reported in the past 24 hours, raising the total fatalities this year to 34.
At the same time, 392 new patients have been admitted to hospitals with dengue and viral fever, bringing the total number of infected cases to 2,411, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed on Monday morning.
The recent surge in hospitalisations highlights ongoing concerns about the spread of the mosquito-borne disease across the country.
DGHS officials detailed the geographic distribution of new cases, showing widespread infection in multiple divisions: Barishal Division reported the highest with 126 cases, followed by Chattogram with 80, Khulna 25, Rajshahi 41, and Dhaka Division combined with 117 cases from both North and South City Corporations.
Rangpur and Mymensingh Divisions each reported a single new case.
Health authorities continue to warn the public to take preventive measures, especially as the rainy season creates favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.
Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, joint and muscle pain, and rashes. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to reduce severe complications and fatalities.
Dengue’s impact has been severe in recent years. In 2023, Bangladesh recorded its deadliest year, with 1,705 deaths and over 321,000 reported cases.
Last year alone, 575 people lost their lives to the disease. Despite ongoing efforts by health agencies, dengue remains a significant public health challenge in Bangladesh.
The DGHS urges citizens to eliminate standing water, use mosquito nets, and seek immediate medical attention if dengue symptoms develop. Hospitals nationwide are preparing to handle a possible rise in cases during the peak season.
