Understanding Masturbation’s Impact on Testosterone and Health

by Shreeya

Masturbation offers numerous health benefits, such as reducing stress, improving mood, and aiding sleep. It may also lower prostate cancer risk and potentially extend lifespan. But its effect on testosterone levels remains a common question.

Medical experts agree that masturbation does not cause significant or lasting changes in testosterone. Dr. Brian McNeil, chief of urology at SUNY Downstate, explains that while there might be a brief rise in testosterone during sexual arousal, this increase is temporary and not sustained.

Similarly, Dr. James Hotaling, a urologist at the University of Utah, notes that testosterone naturally fluctuates throughout the day, making it difficult to link masturbation to consistent hormonal changes.

Testosterone in the body exists mostly bound to proteins like albumin and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), with a smaller amount circulating freely. Studies investigating masturbation’s hormonal effects have been inconclusive.

A 2021 study found masturbation might temporarily prevent a drop in free testosterone but does not affect total testosterone significantly. Another older study showed a slight increase in testosterone after three weeks of abstinence, but these findings are not definitive.

Importantly, masturbation does not lower testosterone levels, debunking a common myth. Sexual thoughts and arousal do not appear to raise testosterone either, according to research. Therefore, masturbation neither harms nor boosts testosterone in any meaningful way.

Regarding testosterone testing, ejaculating before a test is unlikely to skew results significantly. Dr. McNeil suggests that any transient hormonal changes after ejaculation would be minimal and short-lived.

Testosterone levels influence libido and sexual function. Low testosterone can cause reduced sex drive, erectile difficulties, and lower semen volume. These symptoms should prompt consultation with a healthcare provider. Sexual health often reflects overall wellbeing, so addressing hormonal imbalances is important for quality of life.

In summary, masturbation is a normal, healthy activity with no proven long-term effect on testosterone levels. It supports mental and physical health without compromising hormonal balance. Men experiencing symptoms of low testosterone should seek medical advice rather than worry about masturbation’s impact.

Practical Suggestions:

Do not avoid masturbation out of fear it will lower testosterone; it does not.

Monitor sexual health symptoms like low libido or erectile dysfunction as potential signs of hormonal issues.

Consult a doctor for testosterone testing if you experience persistent sexual health problems.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle—balanced diet, exercise, and stress management—to support natural testosterone levels.

This balanced understanding helps dispel myths and encourages healthy attitudes toward sexuality and hormonal health.
