Vitamin D Supplements May Help Slow Aging by Protecting Chromosomes

A new study from the prestigious VITAL clinical trial reveals that vitamin D supplements may help slow biological aging by preserving telomere length, the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes. These findings, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, offer promising insight into how a simple daily supplement may reduce age-related disease risk.

The VITAL trial, co-led by researchers from Mass General Brigham and the Medical College of Georgia, is the first large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trial to show that vitamin D can protect telomeres—a key indicator of cellular aging.

“This builds on earlier findings from VITAL showing vitamin D’s role in reducing inflammation and chronic disease risk,” said Dr. JoAnn Manson, senior author and principal investigator of the VITAL study. She is also the chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

What Are Telomeres, and Why Do They Matter?

Telomeres are repeated DNA sequences located at the ends of chromosomes. They act like “caps” to protect our genetic material from damage. Over time, telomeres naturally shorten as cells divide. However, accelerated shortening has been linked to chronic conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders.

About the VITAL Telomere Study

This sub-study involved over 1,000 participants—men aged 50 and older and women aged 55 and older. They were followed for up to four years. Researchers measured the telomere length in white blood cells at the start, year two, and year four of the trial. Participants were randomly assigned to take either:

  • 2,000 IU/day of vitamin D3,
  • 1 gram/day of omega-3 fatty acids, or
  • A placebo.

Key Findings

Compared to the placebo group, those taking vitamin D supplements had significantly less telomere shortening over the four-year period. The difference was equivalent to preserving nearly three years of biological aging.

On the other hand, omega-3 fatty acids showed no effect on telomere length.

“Our findings suggest that targeted vitamin D supplementation may be a practical way to slow down a biological aging process,” said Dr. Haidong Zhu, the study’s lead author and a molecular geneticist at Augusta University.

While telomere length is just one piece of the aging puzzle, it’s a meaningful one. By supporting telomere health, vitamin D could play a role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases linked to aging.
